In 2017, there’s a whole host of incredible games primed for release, from action to adventure, slots and everything in between. To celebrate, we take a look at some of the greatest Sci-Fi games ever released across console, handheld and PC.
Half Life
Developed by the Valve Corporation in 1998 and released by Sierra Studios for Microsoft, Half-Life is often considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. It follows the story of the scientist and central protagonist Gordon Freeman, who has to escape the fictional science facility known as Black Mesa after an experiment goes wrong. The game has sold over 10 million copies, and spawned a sequel in 204.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
A direct follow up to the much loved Human Revolution game of 2011, Mankind Divided once again follows protagonist Adam Jensen in the year 2029, two years after the events of the previous game and the “Aug Incident”, and event that split humans and augmented people apart, known as the “Mechanical Apartheid”.
Portal 2
Following on from the much loved Portal released in 2007, Portal 2 is often considered one of the greatest games ever made. It featured the voice talents of Stephen Merchant and J K Simmons, it’s a puzzle game with the player taking on the role of the character Chell. It’s developed by Valve, and set within the same universe as the Half-Life franchise.
Fallout 4
Earning an eye-watering $750 million within its first 24 hours, Fallout 4 was both a critical and commercial success. Developed by Bethesda, the game takes place a decade after the events of Fallout 3. After a nuclear holocaust, the players character emerges from an underground vault 210 years after the event, and begins a rescue mission to find his or hers lost son.
Dead Space
Met with critical acclaim and selling over 2 million copies, Dead Space is a prime example of how to do Sci-Fi horror right. The game is set in the year 2058 aboard the USG Ishimura where an outbreak of monstrous reanimated human corpses called Necromorphs has wiped out the ships crew.
Metroid Prime
Stepping away from the traditional aesthetics and gameplay of earlier Metroid games, Metroid Prime was a first person action adventure game developed for the Nintendo Gamecube. It is the fifth game in the Metroid series, and follows the story of Samus, the central protagonist as she intercepts a distress signal from the Space frigate Orpheon, whose crew have been slaughtered.
Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo: Combat Evolved is a 2001 first-person shooter video game developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It follows the central character Master Chief and his virtual assistant Cortana as they battle “The Flood”. The game was a groundbreaker at the time of release, and sold well over a million copies in its first 5 months, something completely unheard of at the time. It has spawned sequels, spin offs and even a live action film.
