Chrome Operating System Video

Today the big G (that’s google to you and me) released a video of the much hyped Google Operating System. Don’t get your hopes up though, the video itself is very ‘sketchy’, literally. The video is a walk through of what the chrome OS will be all about when it’s released sometime next year.

If you have been pondering how much information Google has about you, the Google Dashboard can give you a clue to answering the question. The big “G” has launched a service that processes the data stored by various Google services you use and then provides a summary of the personal settings and privacy of each of them. That’s right, G uses its Google Dashboard to keep track of all your unsavory activities, just in case….

You will see entries containing your user accounts such as email addresses , name e.t.c when you log into the dashboard. Blogger information, Calendars and other file sharing information are also visible on the Google Dashboard.

There are about 20 different Google products in this dashboard including Voice, You tube, Gmail e.t.c You may want to check it out to see if  that stuff you were looking at last night is being tracked…..

****UPDATE 19/11/09 – Check the video of the Google Chrome OS . OK, now we can’t be 100% sure that these are real but these images of the new Google Chrome OS screen shots are post-worthy nonetheless. Allegedly (and you know we’re on thin ground here) a Google Chrome insider demonstrated the new beta Google Chrome OS to an Acer supplier yesterday and lo and behold we have the leaked screenshots.

Apart from the Google Chrome OS screenshots, we have a few (sketchy) details of the operating system in action. On the Acer Extensa 4620Z laptop the Google Chrome OS took about 10 minutes and 1 restart to install. It can reboot desktop-to-desktop in about 25 seconds. Allegedly (again) the beta version of the OS is “amazingly fast”. Much like Windows, the blue orb on the auto-hiding “Chrome Bar” along the bottom of the UI is the start menu and you can navigate the file system much like Windows explorer or in browser mode. Again, in a nod to Windows, Chrome OS netbooks will feature an iconified Chrome key on the keyboard similar to the Windows flag key.

Finally, Microsoft has unveiled their pricing model for the much awaited (and much downloaded) Windows 7 OS. Sticking to the pricing model that was started with Vista, Windows 7 will be available in Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate flavours with prices to match.

The full, out-of-the-box clean install prices and the upgrade prices of the various Windows 7 OS‘s are as follows: Windows 7 Home Edition -$120 for upgrade; $200 for full version. Windows 7 Professional: $200 for upgrade; $300 for full version. Windows 7 Ultimate: $220 for upgrade; $320 for full version.

It doesn’t stop there. Window’s 7 will come with another pricing structure for pre-orders (of which there will be a limited amount released, starting now at Amazon), only available to those who already have XP and Vista Installed. US, Canadian or Japanese PC owners who have XP or Vista, can pre-order Windows 7 for a discount upgrade price of $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional (no discount Ultimate upgrade price though). These are strictly limited on a first come first served basis – Pre Order Now.

If that hasn’t confused you, there is also a separate deal for European users who will not be able to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP or Vista due to EU Competition rules but will be able to buy the full versions of Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional at the discounted upgrade prices.

To summarise, get in early wherever you are and you will save a fair bit otherwise you will have to wait to buy either the upgrade or full versions at full prices. Windows 7, eh? Thought this was supposed to get easier….

Never been a fan of ebooks on handsets due to the small screen real-estate available but comics? That’s a different matter. The UClick and iVerse iPhone applications allow you to read a suitably encoded comic easily on your iPhone, panel by panel, and by all accounts, it’s a pretty good experience. 

Both software houses allow you to download each issue of a comic for $0.99 at the iTunes store and the whole comic-book reading experience is actually enhanced rather than diminished by being on the iPhone. As you can only see a single panel at a time, you don’t accidently skip ahead to other parts of the story which is common when reading a multi-panel comic book. According to Shana Wolf at UClick the process mainly involves moving speech boxes around to fit the constraints of the iPhone screen.

No word on DC or other power-house comic makers being brought into the fray just yet but if the UClick and iVerse applications prove to be the successes they look like being, we’re sure it’s only a matter of time.

The Crackulous iPhone App does exactly what the name suggests (well the name is a bit weird if you normally use ‘crack’ in a different context). Crackulous can supposedly crack any iPhone app, after you’ve bought it for the first time (so someone still has to get their wallet out before you can start ripping off iPhone application programmers).

Software house Cydia have released a beta version of Crackulous for all morally bankrupt iPhone users to download (your iPhone must be jailbroken of course, no way Apple would sanction this). The software will strip the protection off most download iPhone apps meaning that rapidshare is about to get a lot of business.

Imagine, team up with a bunch of like-minded pirates and you could have any iPhone App for a few cents, wait, isn’t that how much most of the cost anyway…?
