After a string of cock-ups, breaches, and no-one knowing what is going on, the Pentagon Cyber Command program will finally get given the go-ahead by President Obama. Tasked with stopping any more embarrassing lapses of security and snotty nosed leet hackers browsing through national security files, the Pentagon Cyber Command will be coordinate the security of military computer networks and developing new offensive cyber-weapons.

Now we have no idea what a cyber-weapon is (probably automatic remote compute hijacking and the such to stop the hackers) but with such a cool sounding unit to work for, we bet the Pentagon Cyber Command staff will have no end of fun thinking up ways to destroy all wannabe script kiddies. The unit will be a part of the Homeland Security set-up(those guys get an awful lot of leeway) and will probably be headed by urrent NSA director Gen. Keith Alexander.

tata-nano-car

The TATA Nano car proves that the Indians know how to cut back in a recession. This is officially the world’s cheapest car, costing little over 100,000 Indian rupees ($2,000 / £1700). Don’t expect to go racing in this though, it runs on a 623-cc 2-cylinder engine with about 30 horsepower….

The main reason why the TATA Nano Car is so cheap is due to the ever so wide corners the Tata Group cut in building this. One windshield wiper, 12-inch wheels and a single shiny piece of material that makes up the dashboard are just some of the sacrifices that had to be made to reach this price point. Not to mention that everything from Power steering to power brakes being optional on the base model and Airbags, antilock brakes and radio not being available at all, and you begin to see why the TATA Nano is so cheap.

Deliveries will begin in India from July with applications for the waiting list (which will cost potential owners $6 just to apply) being accepted from April. Somehow, I can’t see the TATA Nano car being driven in NYC.

The Sony CMT-Z100iR mini-sound system has it all. IPod dock, USB ports, CD player and 20w speakers. As yet unconfirmed, the image from Sony Insider suggests that it won’t be long before the Sony CMT-Z100iR hits our shelves.

The SONY CMT-Z100iR also comes with touch panel controls (no one would be seen dead with buttons these days) and the usual assortment of stuff you would expect in any sound system (3.5mm audio-in jack, bass/treble adjustments, AM/FM radio and a remote control).

As we said, prices and release date are sketchy but the Insider suggests that the SONY CMT-Z100iR will retail for somewhere between $150 and $250.

The previously secret Sony Ericsson Idou was unleashed on the world a day before the World Mobile Congress starts.

This means that the handset is either so amazing that Sony Ericsson wants all your concentration before you get distracted by other phones to be revealed or, it’s so average that it will be swallowed up in all the telecommunication goodness about to be revealed so Sony Ericsson wants to grab some lime-light whilst it can.

With scant information, we’re reserving judgment on the Sony Ericsson Idou, for now.

The Idou (allegedly just a code name), packs in 12-megapixels of camera goodness along with xenon flash. Most surprising is that the Sony Ericsson Idou ships with a Symbian OS, previously the domain of Nokia. With a large, 3.5 inch touch screen, viewing your pics and other supported media (and it should support a lot) on the handset should be a pleasure.

No further details as yet other than that Sony Ericsson Idou will be released in the 2nd quarter of 2009.

The environmental buzz is mighty loud these days and the Samsung Blue Earth solar powered handset is just the kind of gadget they would approve of (although, knowing them, there will be something about the handset that probably totally contradicts their green-values – hard to please those guys).

The Samsung Blue Earth Handset ticks all the right eco-boxes. Solar powered – check; made from recycled materials – check; recyclable packaging - check. It’s even got an eco-walk application that lets you know how much CO2 emissions you have saved by walking instead of driving (eco smugness – check).

Pricing details and technical specs for the Samsung Blue Earth Handset have yet to be revealed but it is scheduled to UK shores come the second half of this year.

If you want to get your hands on a Kindle 2, you better get in line and pre-order quick, Judging by how fast the original Kindle sold out (there are still back-orders from late 2008), the Kindle 2 may go even quicker.

All those still in line for a Kindle 1 will now automatically be upgraded to a Kindle 2. Great for them, sucks for anyone who wants to get into the whole Kindle thing for the first time (we thought it was a fad but it looks like electronic books are here to stay).

Having a browse over at Instructables we came across a set of instructions (funnily enough) by member 1up that lay out 38 steps to get from a SNES (or any games console) to jamming its contents into a more manageable hand-held gaming system. Ben Heck eat your heart out.

Its no walk in the park so don’t even attempt this unless you have a couple of hundred dollars spare, 4 months and balls the size of New York so that you can risk breaking whatever games console you decide to turn into a hand-held (note how although the instructions can be applied to any console, they wisely started with a cheap and cheerful SNES).

If you have the time and determination to make the front page of Digg or Engadget with your leet “portablized” games console then grab your soldering iron and the instructions and get going. Just make sure you take our advice and hope over to eBay to pick up Sega Master System to practice on first before you go breaking apart your xBox 360 (you can spring for a Sega Master System II if you’re feeling wealthy).
