Cameraphones

Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds compact

Some things can never be kept secret and the Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds compact has been unveiled a full day earlier than schedule, probably due to all the leaked pictures that were finding their way onto the web. Looking like a true tribute to classic rangefinders, the Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds gives the Epson R-D1x Digital Rangefinder a run for its money in the style department at least.

Full specs of the Olympus E-P1 have yet to be released (they have managed to keep at least that under their hats until tomorrow) but rumours of a DSLR-sized sensor, 17mm lens with an interchangeable 14-42mm (3x) zoom lens abound. Three colour variations and an array of lenses can be seen in the pictures below.

Another day, another HD camcorder but wait, this time it carries the tag ‘World’s Lightest HD Camcorder’. How Panasonic’s lawyers got away with that one for the Panasonic HDC-SD10 and TM10 1080p camcorder’s we’ll never know.

The standout features of these two hand held camcorders are the price and weight. At sub $600 prices, the Panasonic HDC-SD10 and TM10 camcorders definitely tick the cheap(ish) and lightweight boxes. On the specification front however they are more or less run-of-the-mill.

The Panasonic TM10 comes with 8GB of internal storage and a SDHC slot. The SD10 comes only with the SDHC slot which pretty much sucks. Apart from that they both share 1080p AVCHD video recording; 2.1MP still shooting;an inbuilt Optical Image Stabilizer; a touchscreen fold-out LCD; a three second pre-record funciton; and a 1.9-second startup time.

Price-wise the Panasonic HDC-SD10 will cost you $550, and $600 for the Panasonic HDC-TM10, both available from September.

The Samsung HMX-H106 Full HD Camcorder is the worlds first with 64GB SSD and is now available to pre-order courtesy of the internets procurer of fine goods Amazon. Not content with having a reasonably large SSD to play with, the Samsung HMX-H106 is also full HD so you have plenty of space to store those high density video and image files.

The 64GB SSD storage can hold up to 12 hours of 1920 x 1080 pixel video and you can push that number up by using a SD/SDHC card. Our only gripe is the $900 price tag. Looks like the smaller things get the more pricer they become as it’s still about $300 less expensive thatn the Sony TG5 HD Camcorder.

Released in Korea today, look out for a USA release come 22nd May when the Samsung HMX-H106 Full HD Camcorder is expected to hit the shelves.

The Samsung SMX-C14 and SMX-C10 Camcorders are both billed as ergonomic camcorders and feature Samsung’s attractive ‘Touch of Color‘ design style and Active Angle Lens. On the technical front, they are both gifted 10x optical zoom, Hyper Image Stabilization and a 230,000-dot, swivelling 2.7-inch wide LCD screen.

No details as to what resolution the Samsung SMX-C14 and SMX-C10 camcorders capture at but Samsung aren’t known for doing things on the shabby side so we’re expecting good things. To differentiate the two models, the SMX-C14 comes with 16GB of internal flash memory as well as an SD / SDHC expansion slot. The minnow of the two, the SMX-C10, comes with just a SD / SDHC slot.

Catering to today’s amateur-director generation, both camcorders come with one-touch YouTube uploads and just under three hours of battery life on a single charge. Expect to see the Samsung SMX-C14 and SMX-C10 Camcorders up for grabs come July.

After much leaks, hype and PR, the Nikon D5000 DSLR camera is finally here and the best thing? All the leaks were actually spot on. This is a quality HD DSLR with a swivel screen (ooh) for just (and we say ‘just’ in relation to the usually extortionate prices for this kind of DSLR) $850.

The Nikon D5000 DSLR breaks down thus: 12.3 megapixels, 2.7″ swivel LCD, 720p video at 24fps, Stills at 4fps, EXPEED image processor and 3D Color Matrix Metering II, Built-in dust control systems, an abundance of scene modes, lighting effects and all the other fiddles and tweaks that none but the most picky should attempt to use.

When we say HD, we are talking about 720p and not 1080p like some of the other HD DSLR cameras we have come across lately but what do you expect when the Nikon D5000 DSLR is coming in at sub $1000? The swivel screen is probably more useful for paparazzi types who are on a budget for holding the camera high above their heads (or low to the ground for those all important celebrity upskirt shots).

Available with a kit (a AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens) for $850 or body only for $730. The Nikon D5000 DSLR will be available from the end of this month.

Broadened Creativity and Adaptability
Photographers can easily compose stunning images on the Vari-angle LCD monitor that they can view in a normal position fitting securely within the camera back, or swung out to be rotated or tilted. The monitor can also be stowed with the LCD panel tucked against the camera back to protect the screen when not in use. This tremendous freedom of movement, along with four Live View autofocus shooting modes, affords users the opportunity to shoot from a multitude of imaginative angles. Easy one-button Live View activation now features Subject Tracking autofocus (AF), which automatically locks onto a moving subject. Even if the subject leaves the frame and returns, Subject Tracking AF maintains focus, making the D5000 ideal for capturing fast moving children and pets. In addition to Subject Tracking AF in Live View, the D5000 features Face Priority AF, which automatically detects up to five faces in a scene and focuses on the closest subject; Wide Area AF, which offers a large AF area for optimal hand-held shooting; and Normal Area AF, which provides pinpoint accuracy when shooting with a tripod.

The D5000′s D-Movie Mode allows users the exciting ability to record HD movie clips (1280 x 720) at a cinematic 24 frames per second with sound. Photographers will appreciate the quality produced whether creating vacation clips or intertwining still photographs and movies in a post-production creative montage. Additionally, the D5000 is compatible with a comprehensive assortment of AF-S NIKKOR interchangeable lenses to provide users with the ability to capture perspectives not possible with typical consumer video recording devices. When using any NIKKOR VR lens, D-Movie clips benefit from Nikon VR image stabilization, which automatically activates during recording to deliver added sharpness and image stability. VR image stabilization also extends the D5000′s performance in low-light situations. D-Movie clips are recorded onto an inserted SD or SDHC memory card and saved as Motion JPEG AVI files for easy editing with widely available video editing software.

Further bridging the gap between point-and-shoot cameras and more advanced D-SLRs are the D5000′s 19 automatic Scene Modes, which free users to capture beautiful images without having to manually adjust camera settings. With the broad range of automatic Scene Modes, including Sports, Portrait, Candlelight, Silhouette, Autumn Colors and more, D5000 is the perfect camera for anyone looking to make inspiring images in challenging photographic conditions.

The D5000 also incorporates a comprehensive set of in-camera editing features to make the most of captured images without the need of a computer. The D5000 also introduces several new Retouch features, including a Soft Filter effect, which applies a smooth appearance to faces or the entire image; Perspective Control, which helps correct distortions in perspective often encountered in photographs of architecture; and Color Outline, which creates monochrome outlines of objects in images by eliminating color and tonal gradations. The D5000 saves each of these edited images as a separate JPEG file, ensuring the original image is left unmodified. With Nikon’s exclusive Picture Control Settings, photographers can quickly select various image appearance profiles that include Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait and Landscape settings. In addition, Picture Control provides the ability to create and store up to nine user-defined custom profiles to reflect each user’s personal preferences for hue, color saturation and image sharpening.

Extensive playback options allow users to review their photos in groups of four, nine, or 72 thumbnail images. Alternatively, users can select the Calendar View to easily group and select images by date. These playback features can be viewed either on the Vari-angle LCD or an HDTV with HDMI connectivity available via a dedicated HDMI port on the camera.

Proven Image Excellence
Consumers will immediately appreciate the benefits of the D5000′s 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor coupled with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED™ image processing system, which delivers highly detailed images with vibrant color reproduction and low noise across a broad ISO range. The D5000′s normal ISO range extends from ISO 200 to 3200, allowing for superior shooting in low-light conditions. Additionally, the D5000′s ISO range can be expanded to a Lo 1 setting of ISO 100 or a Hi 1 setting of ISO 6400, furthering the opportunities for previously impossible shots.

Nikon’s exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II, in conjunction with the EXPEED image processing system, contributes to the D5000′s ability to capture breathtaking images by instantly evaluating the exposure elements of each scene and comparing it to an onboard database of information from more than 30,000 images. These split-second calculations allow the D5000 to ensure the right exposure-even when conditions are extreme. Smooth, Swift and Quiet Operation

The D5000′s 11-point auto focus system utilizes Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System with Face Detection to help create the best possible images in a variety of shooting environments. Nikon’s 11-point AF offers best-in-class speed and accuracy, helping to ensure sharp focus, shot-after-shot. First off, forget about owning the Leica Limited-Edition White M8 Digital any time soon. If you need to ask the price then it’s out of your budget. For the rest of us (internet) window shoppers, we’ll just admire the aesthetics and pretend we actually know what to do with anything more than a disposable point-and-shoot camera.

Seeing as the white M8 Digital camera is handmade, only available in a limited run and its sister camera, the safari edition M8 Digital went for a cool 10k, you can expect the Leica Limited-Edition White M8 Digital to cost you bout the same amount if not more.

Following the slew of four-third cameras (well, one other) that we have featured recently, comes the Olympus E-450 DSLR. A 10-megapixel entry level DSLR from the erstwhile camera makers touted as being the world’s smallest DSLR with Art Filters.

The Olympus E-450 DSLR comes with the aforementioned Art Filters (presumably for you arty-types), a 2.7-inch LCD, Live View and a Four Thirds lens mount. Ten megapixels is not a lot these days but if you’re not into the megapixel race, who’s counting?

Added to this is a bundled double lens kit of ED 14-42mm f3.5/5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens and ED 40-150mm f4.0/5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Le. Available from May, if you think $700 is cheap for a camera with these specs then you’re in luck as that’s exactly the price the Olympus E-450 DSLR camera is going for.

Announced during this year’s PMA, the Panasonic DMC-GH1 is finally shipping April 24th. The Panasonic DMC-GH1 Micro Four Thirds is a faux-DSLR camera 1080p HD video. In the recent months we have seen a glut (well, 3) of these type of cameras with 1080p HD video but the signs are good that this may be one of the picks of the bunch.

Set for a Japan first release (of course), the Panasonic DMC-GH1 Micro Four Thirds camera will set you back around $1500 when it arrives Stateside later in the year. Check out the video below for a hand’s on of the Panasonic DMC-GH1.

The Canon Rebel T1i (EOS 500D) DSLR camera was leaked a few hours ago but we have got the full review details right here courtesy of Demystifying Digital. Billed as an entry-level DSLR, the specs on the Canon Rebel T1i are up enough on its predecessor to consider this a rather good buy if you have $800 – $900 to spare.

As usual, the Canon Rebel T1i’s main functions and spec breakdown are as follows: 15.1 megapixels, 1080p and 720p video recording with HDMI out, 3-inch LCD, 3.4fps burst shooting (170 JPEGs max) and DIGIC IV image processor. The only drawback is the 20fps offered by the 1080p video mode meaning that you are likely to stick with the 30fps of the 720p video mode. There is also no jog dial which can be a con or an irrelevance depending on whether or not you like using jog dials.

The Canon EOS 500D (I wish they would pick a name and stick to it) will set you back $899 for the entire kit or $799 for the body only. Whatever you call it, Canon Rebel T1i or Canon EOS 500D that’s still a pricey camera to buy in a recession but iF DSLR’s are your thing, it’s not bad for the price.
