RED 28k EPIC 617 Mysterium Monstro Modular DSLR Cameras

RED have been toying with us for the past few months about their next release and although their hype was getting just a teeny bit annoying, GadgetHeat has to admit that we are impressed by the new RED modular camera DSMC system including the out of this world EPIC 617 Mysterium Monstro.

This new RED DSLR can self-constructed by the user by combing a series of ‘brains’ encapsulated in sensors named the Mysterium (have to give credit to RED marketing guys for the names).

The Mysterium’s can be used to create anything from 5D DSLR cameras, video cameras, prosumer camcorders and even a host of 3D units. It’s a veritable fest of build-your-own (or build-your-brain as RED likes to say).

The RED DSMC system is an impressive (and expensive) idea. You can even adapt it to be compatible with parts from other camera makers including Canon and Nikon. If GadgetHeat was into taking lots of picture we would be gnashing our teeth waiting for this to be released.

As it is, the release date is an as yet an announced murky point in the future but the price? Well the price is a very concrete figure hovering anywhere between $2500 for the 3k RED Scarlet and $55,00 for the 28k EPIC 617 Mysterium Monstro, depending on how you configure the beast. Pics below.

EXILIM Ketai W63CA Released - 8.1 Mega-Pixel Phone

Ever since Samsung raised the stakes by introducing 8 mega-pixels on its cell phones, it was only a matter of time before the others followed and Casio and AU have finally got their act together to release the EXILIM Ketai W63CA 8.1Mpix camera phone in Japan.

The EXILIM Ketai W63CA comes with wide-angle and 9 point auto-focus. The camera phone also comes with a decent sized (480×800) 3.1 inch WVGA screen.

Available in some ‘interesting’ colors (which remind us of the SONY DSC-T700 funnily enough), including a rusty brown that tries to pass itself off as champagne, garish pink and a lovely off-lime green, the EXILIM Ketai W63CA camera phone is available in Japan from next month.

Canon PowerShots SD990 and SD880 - Double Trouble

 Canon just can’t releasing those point and shoot camera and the addition of the Canon PowerShots SD990 and SD880 is more of the same (if it ain’t broke…).

The Canon PowerShots SD990 and SD880 are both due for an October release, just in time for the Christmas rush methinks. Both are Digital ELPH PowerShots with the SD9900 packing almost 15 megapixels (14.7) under it’s belt, it will put your camera phone to shame.

The SD9900 also comes with 3.7 optical zoom (which isn’t that great IMHO) and is available in a cheeky red color due to Canon wanting to promote the fact they’ve managed to manufature 100 million PowerShots since first release (that’s a lot of clicking).

It’s less well endowed sibling, the SD880 comes with 10 megapixels and slightly better 4x wide-angle optical zoom, The SD880 isn’t available in red but it does come rather fetching gold, black and silver for al you bling lovers.

Expect the Canon PowerShot SD990 to set you back $400 and the SD880 to stick you up for $300. If you’re thinking of buying a camera for a significant female other, have a look at the Canon PowerShot E1 - it’s just for girls apparently….

LG DP889 - DVD Digital Photo Frame

Personally i have no time for digital photo frames. Don’t ask me why but they are just one gadget that I just don’t get the point of (and that’s saying something). The LG DP889 portable DVD Digital Photo Frame however, is on the verge of changing my mind. Given LG’s recent DVD Player the LG DVS450H, I have high hopes for this one…

The DP889 is not only your run of the mill 8″ digital photo frame, it also doubles up as a portable DVD player and triples up as a CD player. Pretty diverse functions, just the way I like it. The LG DP889 also comes with USB connectivity and a 3 in 1 memory card slot so you can see that LG wants to make this as usable as possible.

Currently the LG DP889 portable DVD Player Digital Photo is costing around $200 at circuit city even though the list price is $279.95 so if you’re quick you can grab yourself a bargain and have an handy place to play all your DVD’s made on a HD camcorder or store the pictures from your digital camera all in one. Handy.

Canon VIXIA HF100 - Life In HD Camcorder

When we decided to conduct this review and first clapped eyes on the Canon VIXIA HF100, our first though was - why so expensive? You can get the flip for about $400 cheaper if you look around. Then we checked out the hands-on reviews of this High Definition camcorder and although we found a few things to justify the price, we were not entirely happy as there were also plenty of negatives…

The Canon VIXIA HF100 is another offering on the HD Camcorder market and although the VIXIA HF100 has been around for a while, it still remains popular and beats virtually all other competitors except for the aforementioned Flip Video Mino camcorder.

The 12x optical zoom no doubt helps maintains it’s position in the top stop as does the video quality although in low light, images can get grainy and the color output on the Canon VIXIA HF100 can be somewhat over saturated (then again, most HD camcorders are…).

Battery life on the VIXIA HF100 is pretty poor (about an hour’s worth of recording time per charge) and when your thinking about converting between different video formats from AVCHD for example to standard DVD it can take well over two hours even for small files under a half-hour long.

GadgetHeat’s verdict on the Canon VIXIA HF100 camcorder? It’s OK but for the point and shoot crowd you may want to check out the upcoming Kodak Zi6 for more intuitive use.

SONY Cyber-shot DSC-T500 - HD Cyber-Shot

10 mega-pixels have been seen before but SONY’s new Cyber-shot DSC-T500 pumps up the goodness by adding full-screen, high definition, 720p movie recording at 30 frames per second.

As Cyber-Shot’s go, the DSC-T500 packs the pre-requisite Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 5x Optical zoom, MPEG4 AVC/H.264 codec movie function and up to ISO3200.

Digital cameras are stepping up their game all over the shop and with the likes of the PowerShot G9, and even girly (manufacturer’s description not mine) Canon E1 being packed to the brim with functions, even with touch-screen controls, the SONY DSC-T500 is just keeping up with the competition rather than smashing them out of the park…

Canon PowerShot E1 - Girls Point Of View

Now we try our best not to be sexist here (and believe me we try real hard) but the Canon PowerShot E1 had us chuckling in our boots. WTF? Just because a digital camera is pink it’s for women? How do you make a camera especially for women? We can’t get our heads around this one Canon.

With colors like Vanilla White, Pink Cotton and Aqua Blue we see that Canon really thought about what was important to a woman when it came to the Canon PowerShot E1, the color of the damn thing….They may as well stuck Hello Kitty or Barbie on it.

As digital cameras go (and regardless of target demographoic) the specs on the Canon PowerShot E1 are reasonably impressive. 10 mega-pixel lens, 80 to 1600 ISO Range with a 3200 “Boost Mode” and a 4x Optical Zoom. Not bad…for a girl….

If you want a man’s digital camera you should check out the Canon G9 PowerShot. Available in any color as long as it’s black…..

MingJong M6637U Webcam - One Eyed Monster

Bobble head webcams seem all the rage these days (check out Eric Zhang’s Bubble head webcam) and Taiwanese company MinJong have announced the release of their MingJong M6637U Webcam, a 1.3 megapixel web camera. Not much else we can say about it expect that it comes in a range of funky colors and is UVC compliant and USB 2.0 compatible.

Price details yet to be released.

Bubblehead Webcam Now Available For Purchase

If you have been reading this blog for a while (and if you haven’t you better catch up!) you’ll know that I have a love/hate relationship with concept gadgets. The Bubblehead Webcam by Eric Zhang is one concept that has put an end to my moaning by finally becoming a reality.

This quirky little fella was touted around as a concept in May of 2007 and although the Bubblehead Webcam garnered a lot of interest, nothing more was heard..until now that is. The Bubblehead Webcam will be available to buy sometime in the coming months for around $50 (£24.99) from gadgets.co.uk.

The camera by Eric Zhang is billed as a “Poseable personable webcam” and can be posed in a number of position and even has grippable ‘hands’ so that you can have it standing around holding things like pencils and, er, other stuff. The web camera looks like a mini-me and although it will only be available in green and pink initially, GadgetHeat is sure that some artful types out there will soon have their Bubblehead Webcam’s looking more like the Superman design and others shown in the concept drawings.

Not to mention the built in microphone and 1.3 megapixel camera making it reasonable alternative to other webcams such as the ANEO ANWC0804, R2 D2 webcam (one of my favourites) or the logitech quickcam pro for notebooks.

The canon digital cameras are the first name that comes to the mind when one thinks of digital cameras or has an intention to buy best digital cameras. Although hp digital camera is also very good, and so is the kodak digital camera but canon is canon.

Kodak Zi6 HD pocket video camera Mini-Review

The Kodak Zi6 HD pocket video camera looks like it will be a YouTube addict and video pod-casters dream. This hand-held digital camcorder is cheap (as hand-held camcorders go) and cheerful but comes packed with a range of features. We have a quick look at it in this min-review od what is looking like one of the hottest gadgets of the year.

Powered by AA batteries and capable of having its memory capacity expanded by run-of-the-mill memory cards, the $179 asking price gets more attractive the more you find out about all the Kodak Zi6 HD pocket video camera’s features. It’s HD video capable, has built in USB connectors and is YouTube compatible, mini-hand-held digital camcorders don’t get much better.

The killer feature of the Kodak Zi6 HD pocket video camera is its ability to record in 720p HD at 60 frames per second. Okay, 1080i or 1080p HD would have been more future-proof but any mini-hand-held digital camcorder which can record directly into HD is pretty sweet, especially at this price.

You can get your hands on one of these right now and judging by the success of the Flip Video camera, GadgetHeat thinks that the Kodak Zi6 HD pocket video camera looks like a sure-fire hit.
