One will usually expect a lamp to rip power off the mains socket or even USB, but this is not the case for the Phone-Jack Powered lamp that rips power off any abandoned telephone socket.

Now you can conveniently say that there is a use for all abandoned telephone land line sockets in the home. The Phone-Jack Powered lamp has an RJ11 jack end which usurps power from the phone company instead of using electricity.

This question will be probably be asked, Is Phone-Jack Powered lamp legal? Well, I know it needs to be certified for use in the UK before plugging into the phone jack but am not sure it’s the same round the world. The price goes for a cheap sum of $4.73. Definitely worth it.

Art Lebedev Navigarius GPS

Round pegs for square holes never works but Art Lebedev’s Navigarius GPS comes in a fetchingly round design that would make any dashboard a more fashionable backdrop (well, we say any). The Art Lebedev Navigarius GPS comes with touchscreen controls, USB, microSD, cigarette lighter adapter and a thin, detachable stand. The problem? It’s a concept.

Yes folks this round bag of goodness hasn’t yet hit production and we’re not sure if Art Lebedev’s Navigarius GPS ever will so at the moment we just have to salivate over what could have been (or may yet still be if someone picks this up). The strange thing is, we’re just trying to work out that if Art Lebedev’s Navigarius GPS had been seen in a 99-cent store or the like, would we still think it was as cool?

Spoticam Lamp

The Spoticam Lamp gives you the (reassuring?) feeling that you’re being watched even though it is only a ‘sign of the modern times’ light source. The average person living in a big city is caught on camera around 300 times a day so the Spoticam Lamp should make you feel right at home, in your own home.

Designed by Antrepo Design Industry, the Spoticam Lamp comes in pure white or raw aluminium and with an adjustable arm so you can point it in the direction of your next door neighbour and make them think that you have your eye on them.

No word as yet as to when the Spoticam Lamp will actually be manufactured so if you want that CCTV feeling, just step outside your front door and stand under a street lamp, believe us, you are being watched.

Wooden Electronic Ruler

The Wooden Electronic Ruler concept by designer Shay Shafranek would have definitly put the cool back into your school pencil case if it was around way back when.

The wooden cover cleverly hides a row of electronic points which you slide you pencil or marker across, as demonstrated in the picture, and gives you a readable output of the distance via the Wooden Electronic Ruler’s embedded LED.

The Wooden Electronic Ruler also allows you to set one of its electronic point as 0, meaning all distance will be measured form that point forward. If you set two or more points as 0, the distance between the two will be treated as a single unit. The ruler even keeps the recorded length displayed until the reset button is pressed.

As mentioned in the very first paragraph (if you were paying attention!), the Wooden Electronic Ruler is just a concept at the moment but we’re sure it would be a smash hit with all the high-school kids should it ever get to be manufactured.

iBum Chair

The iBum Chair can only be a useful piece of furniture if you are a clown, paparazzi or just plain perverted. Practical jokers can invite their unsuspecting victims (or celebrities with a penchant for not wearing underwear) to sit in the iBum Chair and a quick flash later (pun intended), the iBum Chair will have photocopied their backside and printed it convieniantly at the side of the chair ready for you have a good laugh at them (for about 5 seconds) or send it to the local celebrity gossip magazine (could be profitable).

The iBum Chair is designed by Japanese designer Tomomi Sayuda and seems to serve no purpose apart from to get a good look at people’s buttocks. No doubt it could be big in Japan if it ever leaves the concept art phase but as far as the whole genre of multi-media furniture is concerned, it’s pretty limited. Jelly Fish Broadband Router

This Jelly Fish Broadband Router is pretty cool looking and we can see this being as must have as a ‘lava lamp’ in many a student flat. The Jelly Fish Broadband Router is part of a project by Talk Talk and Goldsmith University students in London aiming at designing ‘Routers of the Future‘ and the Jelly Fish router is definitely a break from the ugly black boxes we all have hidden in the corner under our desks.

Designed by student Stephan Bischof, the Jelly Fish router is inspired by ‘the study of fluorescent properties in jellyfish anatomy and their smooth movements through water’…right. What’s really cool is that they ‘have embodied this notion into a glowing breathing sequence, which indicates bandwidth strength’. Whatever the science behind it, the Jelly Fisher router is hawt and definitely a step in the right direction away from the traditional black boxes.

Other routers in the ‘Routers of the Future‘ project include the Route O’clock (router shaped like a clock, tells the time and indicate signal strength), Energy Saving Router and the Hybrid Router that doubles up as a 60′s styled side table. Video of these and the Jelly Fisher router below.

Toyota Mind-Controlled Wheelchair

Introducing the Toyota Mind-Controlled Wheelchair. Since the automobile industry has gone to pot, Toyota have decided to put some of their eggs into this Mind-Controlled Wheelchair concept. Although it is still not finished, the Toyota Mind-Controlled Wheelchair can be made to move and steer just with the force of sheer brain-powers. Dummies are out of luck.

Brain signals can be deciphered by the inbuilt electroencephalograph (EEG) technology within milliseconds. Software then automagically transforms those brainwaves into commands so that the Mind-Controlled Wheelchair can move forward, left, or right almost instantly, X-Men stylee.

To stop the wheelchair, the user has to puff up a cheek meaning that with the dorky electrode cap and you puffing up like a blow fish, your cool-points take a hit but who cares, you’re control stuff with your mind!! Check out the Toyota Mind-Controlled Wheelchair in action below.

Designed by Jacob Ballard, the VertaBrate Back Massager fits onto your spinal cord like an alien parasite of sorts and gently (or vigourosly depending on the settings), massages your back by applying constant pressure direct to the source of discomfort.

If you need a temperature based solution, you can even place the VertaBrate Back Massager in the fridge or microwave to achieve the desired temperature. As the VertaBrate is in contact directly with the spinal nerves, the nodes are able to offer a deep, soothing massage that a pressure-pack or other back-aid may not be able to do.

Only a concept at the moment, we’re sure that back pain suffer’s world wide are hoping that Jacob Ballard’s VertaBrate Back Massager becomes a reality at some point in the future.

This Nokia E97 NOKIA Envelop Concept Phone definitely looks slick but we’re not sure how practical it would actually be. The tear-off LCD screen component would definitely be fragile and a breakage hazard. Still, it looks bad-ass enough for us to wish that Nokia actually did think outside the box like this.

Designed by 23 year-old Paris student Fabien Nauroy, the Nokia E97 NOKIA Envelop Concept Phone is another concept we would love to see on the shelves but alas, we fear that it is never to be. Check out the specs and details of the handset below.

The stackable Mac Mini Dockable Desktop Radio concept is pretty nice to look at we have to admit although how many Mac Mini users would also need a separate radio unit (as opposed to streaming on-line direct from the Mac Mini) we don’t know. The number must be in the low 10′s….

In any case, as concepts go, the Mac Mini Dockable Desktop Radio is nice to look at and that’s all that matters when you know a product is never going to come to market (or get off the drawing board). Designed by Sebastien Sauvage, the speaker and radio tuner are awash with USB ports and are both stackable with your Mac Mini to make a cute little unit.

Wish, pray and maybe hope but the Mac Mini Dockable Desktop Radio will remain on the concept pages methinks.
